Located 15 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina, Carolina Beach sits on a narrow strip of land wedged between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Once considered a wild party spot, the town has morphed into a family beach vacation destination with small cottages, family run restaurants, and a boardwalk with amusement park rides and Britt’s Donuts, a Carolina Beach establishment famous for some of the best donuts in the United States for over 75 years.
While the Carolina Beach is undergoing a gradual transformation toward Myrtle Beach style condominiums and large chain hotels, there are still a number of small, family run establishment that will bring baby boomers back to the days of family beach vacations. If you take a drive along the beach, you’ll still find variety stores, bait shops, and a few vintage motor courts that you may remember from visits to the beach as a child.
The main business district of Carolina Beach is centered around an active boating center with charter fishing boats and larger excursion boats. Not far away is the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, known as one of the 10 best boardwalks in the United States. Developed in coordination with the oceanfront Marriot Courtyard Resort Hotel, the boardwalk has condos, restaurants, and shops to meet the needs of visitors of all ages and interests.
For a relaxing afternoon, head to the fishing pier or beach with gear from one of the many tackle shops in the area. Carolina Beach is known for its abundance of king mackerel and the area hosts a number of fishing tournaments with prizes of up to $50,000.
If fishing is not your thing but you still love the outdoors, consider camping out at Carolina Beach State Park. It’s a great place to explore beachfront habitat and is the home to Venus flytraps and pitcher plants, through backs to a time in history where plants ate live insects.
During the summer months, Carolina Beach hosts a weekly Boardwalk Blast with free movies, live music, and fireworks. Unlike many summer vacation destinations where parents and children focus on separate activities, Carolina Beach creates a space for families to spend time together. While it may not have the hottest clubs or theme parks, this family beach vacation destination provides a rare opportunity for families to get together and enjoy each other’s company. Before it’s too late and your children are all grown up, explore one of North Carolina’s best family destinations.
