Matilda the Musical

Simon Harding

London has long been a great family destination, with a huge range of family-friendly attractions and in recent years London’s Theatreland has caught on, with some of the best family shows and musicals enjoying long runs and sell-out performances.

So for whatever reason you come to London and whatever else you do during the day, make sure you take in a performance of a London musical to really top off your short break in style.

One such show is Matilda the Musical about a British schoolgirl with amazing powers based on the novel by Welsh writer, Road Dahl

matilda the musical

Matilda the Musical first premiered in the West End in November 2010 and since has enjoyed a run of success, including winning Best Musical and Best Actress (Matilda) in October 2011. It has received uniformly positive reviews, and has been said to best capture the literary world of Road Dahl. This spellbinding musical, packed with laughs, fun, sadness and morals, is quickly seeping into the hearts of theatre lovers young and old, worldwide.

If you are interested in all forms of theatre, musical or otherwise, or are just looking for a great place to take the kids, try Matilda the musical, a heartfelt story about a little girl who was born with a thirst for knowledge in an uncaring world. Young Matilda soon learns that neither her parents, nor her brother, nor the head teacher of her school really cares about her innate ability to learn, and so takes it upon herself to gain the knowledge she needs to progress in life. Through her journey, and with a little bit of magic, we see Matilda as she makes some very adult decisions for her young age, facing great adversity and coming out on top.

Matilda is what every young bookworm dreams to be. Smart, quiet, yet confident and bold, and not afraid to defend yourself for whom you are. Plus her telekinetic powers also help a lot.  However the musical Matilda strives to be so much more than just a role model for young children. The song ‘When I Grow Up’ speaks of all the things children wish to do when they grow up, including being able to carry all the heavy things that adults have to lug around. It is a story about growth, and about the idea that you never really grow up, you just get bigger and wiser and more capable of dealing with things that life throws your way.

With a star cast and catchy, meaningful songs from the acclaimed songwriter Tim Minchin, Matilda provides an evening of first rate entertainment for the whole family. You’ll be tapping your foot from start to finish, and many of the shows messages will resonate with you for a long time after you leave the theatre, and London, behind.

Matilda! The Musical is showing in Cambridge Theatre in London, a short walk from Covent Garden Station, and is easily accessible by both taxis and coaches. Tickets are available at varying prices both on the official Cambridge Theatre website and at other ticket retailers online.
